Christa Townsend was a four-year standout in the early years of the SMS women’s tennis program, competing for coach Mary Jo Wynn from the 1971 season to 1974. Townsend played in the #1 and #2 singles positions during her career and she also competed in the #1 doubles spot. She helped the Bears’ tennis teams to Missouri AIAW championships in 1971, 1973 and 1974 and SMS had a runner-up finish in the state meet in 1972. As a freshman in 1971, Townsend helped the Bears to their first-ever MAIAW championship and a fifth-place finish at the regional meet. In 1973, the club finished as runner-up at the Missouri Valley regional and was 13th overall at the national championship. The 1974 Bears finished third in the AIAW regional meet and 22nd in the nation. Townsend captured the #1 singles championship at the Missouri AIAW meet as a senior in 1974.
