Brenda Hayes Raynor was a standout distance runner for SMS in track and cross country from 1989 to 1993, competing for the Bears of coach Jeff Berryessa. A native of Branson, Mo., Hayes came to SMS after an undefeated senior season at Branson High in her specialty, the 800-meter run, including a Class 3A state title in that event. At SMS, Hayes earned 10 all-conference indoor track picks and five selections during the outdoor seasons in which she competed. She was a three-time conference track champion, winning the 1991 indoor 800-meter run, the 1992 indoor mile and 1992 outdoor 3,200-meter relay. She took league runner-up honors indoors in the 1992 800-meter run and 3,200-meter relay and outdoors in the 1991 800-meter run, 3,200-meter relay and 1992 1,500-meter run, plus seven third-place finishes. Named to the SMS all-decade track team in 1992, Hayes owns or shares four SMS school records, including the 3,200-meter indoor relay as well as the outdoor 1,500-meter run, mile relay and 3,200-meter relay and has held the indoor mile mark. She earned all-conference cross country honors as a senior. Hayes led SMS to its best track finish in 10 years with second place at the 1992 league indoor meet. In cross country, she led SMS to second place at the Gateway meet in 1991. She won both all-conference and academic all-conference honors in cross country in 1992, finishing fourth individually in the league meet. Hayes still holds the sixth best time in SMS cross country history for 5,000 meters.
