RUSSELL ORMS
Golf, 1968-71
Inducted February 16, 1991
Russell Orms was a four-year lettermen for the SMSU golf Bears from 1968 through 1971 and played on four of the many highly-successful SMS squads in the spring sport. His performances overlap the coaching tenures of coaches A.J. McDonald and Jay Kinser. Springfield native Orms fired a 149 at the 1968 MIAA championship to lead the Bears to what was SMSU’s 17th and last league title under Coach McDonald. The Bears were third in the conference in 1969 and, when Coach Kinser took over a golf coach in 1970, Orms helped the Bears back as he shot a 144 to return the league crown to Springfield. The 1971 season saw Orms shoot a 147 at the conference meet as the Bears won yet another league title. SMSU entered what was then the NCAA College Division golf championship with team entries and the meet in Youngstown, Ohio, and ranked 10th in the 1971 team standings in Chico, Calif. Orms entered individual competition in the 1969 meet and finished 13th in medalist competition to gain NCAA All-America honorable mention selection.
