RANDY MAGERS
Basketball and Baseball, 1970-74
Inducted February 28, 1987

Randy Magers also came to SMSU from Springfield Central High and excelled in two sports for the Bruins throughout his career.  He was a four-year regular at shortstop for SMSU baseball coach Bill Rowe from 1971 through 1974 and started in 127 consecutive games at that position during his career, setting what was then a career mark for games played.  At the time he graduated, he was also the career record holder in doubles, walks, assists and total chances and was in the top five in runs scored, home runs, at bats and hits.  He was selected the Bears’ Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was picked to the all-MIAA first team as both a junior and senior.  He landed a spot on the all-region team and was on the Missouri collegiate all-state team as a senior.  He was a Bear co-captain as both a junior and senior.  In basketball, Magers had nailed down a spot in the starting lineup for the Bears of Coach Bill Thomas by the latter stages of his sophomore season and he was a regular for the next two seasons as SMSU won backto-back MIAA titles and put together two 20-win seasons.  Magers led the Bears in assists as a junior and was selected the team captain his senior year as the Bears roared to a 21-9 season and added a regional championship to their league title.  SMSU went all the way to the national title game before losing to Morgan State for the Division II championship.  Magers was selected to the all-tournament team at the national meet.  He was third on the Bears in scoring as a senior and led the club in field goal accuracy and assists.  He was an all-conference second team selection and wrapped up his cage career with 791 points and 346 assists.  His assist total was a record at the time he concluded his career and he still ranks seventh on the all-time list and he’s also currently seventh in career free throw accuracy.  Magers was given the Guy Thompson Award.
