Football, Basketball and Track, 1919-23
Inducted October 28, 1978
The late Paul “Molly” Matthews lettered in football and basketball four seasons each for SMS and was three-year track letterman in a Bruin career which spanned the years from 1919 to 1923. A native of Seneca, he was the captain of the unbeaten state championship SMS team in 1922 and was named as the quarterback on the all-state team. At 5-9 and 155 pounds, he was also a basketball standout and it was written of him in 1923, “It will be years before anyone will duplicate his brilliant floor work and excellent basket-shooting.” In track, Matthews was a star half miler and miler for the Bears in years in which SMS was a consistent winner of the state collegiate track championship.
