Morris Stephens was a three-sport standout for SMS in his playing days with four letters each in football and basketball and a pair of awards in tennis between 1933 and 1937. He played quarterback for the grid Bears of Coaches Briggs and McDonald and was also utilized as a pass receiver. He gained all-conference honorable mention in football in 1934. The Springfield Greenwood product was the Bears’ basketball co-captain in 1934-35 and gained all-conference selection at forward that season and he was selected the honorary captain of the Bruins as a senior two years later. The high-scoring cager also excelled in tennis as he was part of a doubles team which claimed a state title in 1937.
