Merry Crouch started her gymnastics career at a very young age and won state honors in Iowa before coming to SMS. Under coach Chic Johnson, Crouch was a standout in the balance beam, uneven parallel bars, vault and floor exercise. She helped SMS to a regional title as a freshman and the team finished in second place nationally in the AIAW meet. She overcame a long layoff from a serious knee injury to gain places in region competition and helping SMS to third in the national meet.
