MAX CHERRY
Football and Track, 1918-23

Max Cherry came to SMS from Mt. Vernon and was a four-year standout in both football and track.  He was the SMS football captain in 1918 and came back t play in 1921, 1922, and 1923; and was a trackman from 1921 through 1924.  He captained the track team in 1923, scored 11 points for SMS in the 1923 state meet, and set a state record in the pole vault.  The following year he established a new league standard in the broad jump and also competed in the dashes and low hurdles.  He was a gridiron standout at quarterback and halfback and was also the Bears’ placekicker.  The sportswriting of the day noted that “Cherry was always gone before they realized that the ball had been snapped”.  He received three selections to the all-state team and helped SMS to the state championship in 1922 in a 7-0-0 season in which SMS set a school scoring record which still stands.
