A native Springfieldian, Mark “Doc” Frye was a four-year basketball letterman for SMS between 1933 and 1936. He had the reputation of “playing big” despite his size and was an outstanding floor leader for the Bears. He was a member of SMS teams which won two conference titles. The 1934 club won seven of eight conference games and turned in a 15-4 season record while the following year the Bruins were 16-3 overall and had a 6-2 mark in MIAA activity. A starting forward, Frye was a second team all-conference selection as a junior and was the captain of the Bears during his senior season.
