Louis “Ludy” Stark was a four-year standout for SMS in football and basketball and won two letters in track in a Bruin career running from 1926 to 1930.  A native Springfieldian, he was twice an all-conference selection in football and played for Coach A.W. Briggs’ 1928 team which went 7-1-1, shared the MIAA title, and outscored its opposition 140-13.  On September 24, 1927, quarterback Stark had one of the greatest days ever experienced by an SMS gridder as he rushed for four touchdowns, scored a fifth on a pass reception, and tallied for a sixth time on a punt runback as the Bears demolished Southwest Baptist 94-0.  The following year he was named the best back in the conference and was described as “a sensational broken field runner” for the league champion Bears.  On the hardwoods, Stark played for Coach Andy McDonald’s MIAA champs in 1927-28 and was co-captain of the Bruins the following year.  He was one of the MIAA scoring leaders throughout his four-year career.  The 1927-28 season included an SMS victory over the University of Arkansas in which forward Stark scored 27 points.  He also played tennis at SMS and was league runnerup in both singles and doubles in 1929.
