Springfield native John Tindall earned a total of 10 SMS varsity letters in three different sports in a career which lasted from 1926 to 1931. He was a starter in football as a freshman quarterback, was a member of the powerful 1928 team which rolled to eight straight shutouts in a 7-1-1 year, and gained all-conference honors on the 1929 Bruin team which posted a 6-2-1 season mark. He also served as the Bruins’ placekicker. In addition to his four grid letters, he won four in basketball, playing for the SMS MIAA championship team of 1927-28 and serving as the Bruins’ captain in 1929-30. His final two letters came in track in 1927 and 1928 as he ran the low hurdles and competed in the broad jump and javelin.
