HERBERT BENCH
Track, 1936-39
Inducted October 30, 1982
Herbert Bench also came to SMS in 1935, and was a track standout during the same era as Bill Baker. Competing primarily as a miler and two-miler, the Waynesville product first lettered in track as a freshman in the spring of 1936. In 1937 he placed second in the 1,500-meter run at the AAU meet in June. He had previously snapped a six-year old MIAA record by running the two-mile in 10:03.4 minutes at the conference championship meet. He went on to win the mile run as well in the league meet.
