Henry Kilburn came to SMS in 1928 as a product of Springfield Greenwood and earned four letters each in football, basketball, and track before he graduated in 1932.  He was a standout end on the grid Bears and his tenure included playing for the 1928 SMS team which went 7-1-1 and tied for the league title with Kirksville when the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the contest for the league championship.  Kilburn was a high-scoring forward in basketball and played for the 1930-31 SMS team which was awarded the MIAA championship when Maryville forfeited several games for using an ineligible player and the third sport in which Kilburn made his athletic contribution was as a member of the SMS mile relay team in track.
