GENE WEBB
Golf, 1940-42
Inducted September 22, 1979
Gene Webb was one of the early stalwarts in SMS golf and has been recognized as one of the top golfers ever to perform in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He was the MCAU conference individual medalist in 1939 while playing for Drury College and transferred to SMS the next year. Playing under Coach Andy McDonald, Webb was a member of SMS MIAA championship teams in 1940 and 1941. The Bears edged Rolla by seven strokes for the 1940 league crown and carded an 11-stroke margin in 1941. SMS has dual marks of 5-1 and 8-4 in those two seasons and then wound up second to Rolla in the 1942 conference meet. Webb, native of Jasper, was the MIAA’s individual medalist in 1941 with a score of 139 and he repeated that honor a year later with a 145 score in the conference meet. After he left SMS, he continued his golf on the professional level.
