GAYLE RUNKE
Golf Coach, 1974-92

After graduating from Arizona in 1973, Gayle Runke joined the SMS staff as golf coach and physical education instructor in the fall of 1974.  She went on to lead the SMS women’s golf program for 18 seasons through 1992.  Runke guided the Bears to second place in the region in 1979 and third in the Gateway Conference in 1987 and 1991.  A Mankato, Minn., native, she attended Arizona and was a standout on the Wildcat golf team that finished second in the nation in 1972.  Runke competed at the national meet three times, placing 12th individually in 1972.
