Finis Engleman was a three-sport athlete for SMS in the very early days of the institution’s history. He played football in 1913, 1914, and 1915; basketball in 1915, 1916, and 1917; and ran track in 1915. He was twice named the basketball team captain and was described as the “best basketball center in the state” in 1917. He was an all-state selection in both football and basketball in 1916 and led SMS to the state basketball title in a 12-3 season in 1917. The Bears were 10-1 and 13-3 in two other seasons which Engleman played while the 1914 football team he played for was 6-0-0 and outscored its opponents 154 to 0. Born in Cedar County near Dunnegan, Engleman was the recipient of an SMS Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1957.
