ERICA CALHOUN

Erica Calhoun was a versatile four-year SMS track standout for the Bears of coach Jeff Berryessa from 1988 to 1991. A native of Kansas City, Mo., and a standout athlete at Kansas City Southeast High School, Calhoun capped her SMS athletics career as a senior in 1991 when she was a Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference all-league selection and was named the Most Valuable Athlete at the 1991 Gateway outdoor championship after winning both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and placing sixth in the long jump.  She also was a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay team which took third place at the conference meet and set an SMS women’s outdoor record with a time of 3:50.45 minutes.  Also during the 1991 season, Calhoun set an SMS stadium women’s record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.21 seconds.  In 1990, Calhoun was a two-time all-Gateway selection, with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the league indoor meet and a runner-up spot in the 100-meter dash in the league outdoor event.  She also set a school record in the 200-meter dash.  She was also the Bears’ top sprinter as a sophomore in 1989 and was a member of the sprint medley relay team which set an SMS school record at the Kansas Relays.  For her career efforts, Calhoun was named to the SMS All-Decade Team in both indoor and outdoor track in 1991-92 in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Gateway Conference.
