Duke Hiett was a letterman for SMS in football in both 1926 and 1927 after coming to Springfield from Houston, Missouri. He was a standout for the Bears on offense at both halfback and fullback. “Mutt,” as he was known, also lettered one season in basketball as a guard. He earned a reputation as a good student of the game and valuable strategist and was regarded as an important cog on the Bruin club for his spirit and enthusiasm.
