DICK JONES

Republic native Dick Jones was a right-handed pitcher for the SMSU baseball Bears, lettering four seasons between 1969 and 1972.  He was a member of Coach Bill Rowe’s MIAA championship teams in 1969 and 1970 and those Bear ballclubs went on to become the first SMSU teams to play in the Division II World Series.  SMSU finished second in the nation in 1969 and third in 1970.  The MIAA went from divisional play to a round robin schedule in 1971 and Jones posted his best season with a 7-2 record and a 0.59 earned run average that was the second best figure in the nation that season.  Jones’s ’71 ERA is the best ever for the Bears.  Jones finished with a career mark of 15-9.  He was selected the SMSU Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 1969 and was named to the MIAA all-conference first team as a junior in 1971.
