Dennis Scott was a member of four SMS football squads from 1963 through 1966, participating on ballclubs which won MIAA championships when he was a freshman and a senior.  A four-year letterman, Kansas City native Scott saw action at halfback on both offense and defense.  He was employed as a ball carrier and pass receiver on offense for his first three seasons, and was a standout in the defensive secondary throughout his career.  The Bears were 9-0 under Coach Orville Pottenger in the regular season in 1963 and went on to the Mineral Water Bowl game.  The following year, the Bruins were second in the league with Scott a defensive regular for the first time.  He set an SMS school record on Oct. 31, 1964, when he intercepted four passes in a game against Missouri-Rolla.  Jim Mentis took over as SMS head coach in 1965, and the Bears, 7-3 for the season, were again second in the MIAA as Scott gained all-conference first team honors.  He repeated his all-league selection as a senior in 1966 as the Bears were 7-33, won the MIAA with a perfect 5-0 league record, and again went to the Mineral Water Bowl.  Scott led the secondary to a team record 29 pass interceptions for the season in 1966, a record which still stands.  He was a co-captain on the 1966 team, and he was selected to receive the Virgil Cheek Athletic Achievement Award when he graduated from SMS in 1968.
