Basketball, 1931-35
Inducted September 22, 1979
Delbert “Dell” Scroggins played in the same era with Harold Eberhart under Coach Andy McDonald at SMS and was a starter from his freshman season on. The Pleasant Hope product helped SMS to a league runnerup spot in 1931-32 despite missing several games with a knee injury. He was a starter again the next year and a Bruin co-captain his junior year in addition to gaining the first of two straight selections to the all-MIAA first team. The 1933-34 Bears were 7-1 in MIAA play and 15-4 overall as they made it to the AAU playoffs in Kansas City. The Bruins won the first game but then lost to the eventual national AAU champion Tulsa Diamond Oilers. A star-studded lineup including Eberhart, Webb Morris and Joe Nickle gave McDonald and SMS one of its first great teams and many of the Bears were instrumental in a 16-3 mark and another MIAA title in 1935. Scroggins repeated his all-league selection as the Bears went 6-2 in conference play and edged Central Missouri by a single game for the loop championship.
