Dan Dwyer is the only SMSU athlete ever to claim two individual NCAA national titles, winning both the 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run at the 1976 NCAA Division II outdoor meet in Slippery Rock, Pa.  A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Dwyer came to SMSU as a junior college transfer in 1974 and lettered twice each for the Bears in track and cross country.  Dwyer still holds SMSU outdoor records for the mile run, two-mile run, three-mile run, six-mile run, 5,000-meter run and 10,000-meter run outdoors and the 3,000-meter run and two-mile run indoors.  Dwyer was a Division II cross country All-American twice for SMSU, finishing third in the 1974 Division II meet in Springfield to lead the Bears of Coach Chuck Hunsaker to an NCAA Division II national championship, and then taking second in the national meet in 1975 as the Bears were fourth nationally.  SMSU also won MIAA titles in cross country both years Dwyer ran for SMSU, as he captured a second and first in three-mile run at the league outdoor meet his junior year, winning the two-mile run at the conference record times in the outdoor meet his senior season.  Dwyer also served as the SMSU men’s track coach during the 1978 SMSU spring season.
