CLYDE JAMES
Football and Basketball, 1920-24
Inducted October 28, 1978
Another well-known early-day SMS athlete was Clyde “Chief” James, a football letterman in 1922 for the unbeaten grid Bears, and a basketball award winner four years in a row from 1922 through 1925. A native of Seneca, he worked his way from a job as a substitute to the team’s high point man and helped the Bruins to a 13-1 record in 1924 in what is the best single season percentage ever recorded by an SMS cage team. He was the Bruin captain that year and was named to the all-state team as a forward. James was inducted in 1977 into the Indian Athletic Hall of Fame at Lawrence, Kansas.
