Charles “Butch” Marshall was yet another Springfield Central High product who excelled for the basketball Bears for four seasons.  Marshall began his career in 1960 under Coach Eddie Matthews and got into 16 games.  For the next three seasons, however, he was the leading SMSU scorer as he averaged 14.9 a game as a sophomore, 14.6 a contest in his junior year and 13.9 when he was a senior.  Marshall was selected to the MIAA all-tournament team each of his last three seasons and was second, first and third on the Bears in rebounding his final three seasons.  Marshall was the sophomore leader of the Bears in a 15-8 MIAA runnerup campaign in 1962 and was the only veteran remaining when Coach Matthews brought his much-heralded southwest Missouri freshman recruit group to the bear camp in the fall of 1963.  Marshall became the senior captain of Coach Matthews’ final SMSU team and set the stage for what would eventually become a string of five successive MIAA titles.  He earned all-conference laurels his senior year and wound up with a career total of 1.016 points.  He was only the fourth SMSU player ever to score 1.000 points in a career, was tied for second in career scoring when he graduated, and still ranks 15th on the all-time point list more than two decades later.  Marshall also had 504 rebounds during his 78-game SMSU career.
