Ben Green was a swimming letterman for Coach Dale Williams in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973 and swam on SMSU teams which, despite not having a home pool in which to compete, won the MIAA championship four years in a row. Green was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable swimmer as a freshman in 1970 and as a sophomore in 1971 and he led the Bears to a four-year record of 41-10 in dual meet competition, including an SMSU season record 12 wins in both 1970 and 1973 with the Bears going undefeated in dual competition in 1970. Green was an SMSU co-captain as a senior and the Bears’ Most Valuable Swimmer as a freshman and as a junior. He won three individual events in the MIAA meet three years in a row and swam on the SMSU medley relay team which won the MIAA title four years in a row. Green graduated with seven school records, shared two others and held or shared six MIAA records. His specialties were the freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. The St. Louis native won the MIAA 100 and 200-yard backstroke races as a freshman, the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races as a sophomore and junior and the 1650-yard freestyle each of his first three years.
