The Missouri State men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished last on the final day of the Purdue University Invitational, in West Lafayette, Ind., Sunday. The women ended the meet with 182 points and the men concluded with 364.
  Francy Palma was the highlight for the women's team, setting a new Missouri State varsity record in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.61. The record was previously held by Lindsey Probizanski, with a time of 2:07.65, which she set at the 2003 Missouri Valley Conference championship.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay was the top finisher of the day for the Bears. The squad of Marcy O'Neil, Andi Rojas, Kyla Meuer and Jordan Hawkins earned sixth place in a time of 3:32.77, a team best for the season. Rojas also added an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.13.
On the men's side, the 100-yard freestyle was a close race between the top-six finishers, having only 0.70 of a second separating first and sixth-place. Mitch Richards finished fourth in the race at 45.75, and Ignacio Gayo finished sixth in 45.88.
Seth Johnson was a fourth-place finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:02.96, and finished slightly ahead of Matt Beasley, who earned sixth place in the event in 2:03.64.
Victor Serra added a fourth-place finish for the Bears in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:49.73. Eduardo Pajaras swam to sixth-place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.30, and Ryan Bullock finished sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with a time of 16:07.86.
The men ended the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The relay team of Richards, Beasley, Gayo and Serra, swam their best time of the season in 3:01.95.
On the women's side of the Purdue Invite, Purdue won with 880 points, followed by Florida (683), Tennessee (670), Missouri (483.50), Northwestern (443.50), Southern Illinois (208), and Missouri State (182). The men's meet was won by Florida with 882.50 points, followed by Purdue (675), Northwestern (629), Southern Illinois (466), Missouri (391.50) and Missouri State (364).
The Bears will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m., in St. Peter's, Mo., when they compete against Lindenwood University.
