Greenwood Laboratory School, 1968-1990
Larry Atwood had a 545-242 mark in 21 GHS basketball seasons, with state runner-up finishes in 1980 and 1982. He was tournament director for the Greenwood Blue and Gold Tournament for a quarter century.
After his retirement from Greenwood, Atwood spent 12 years as an instructor at Missouri State and also worked at the game day table crew for MSU Bears' basketball games in Hammons Student Center and JQH Arena. He had previously coached one season at Weaubleau, three years at Clever and four seasons at Buffalo. His Buffalo stint included taking his 1965 team to a state championship.
Atwood was also a college basketball referee, and has been inducted into the Willard High School Athletics Hall of Fame and the Springfield Area Softball Hall of Fame. He was a well-known fast-pitch softball pitcher, coach and umpire. Coach Atwood passed away in 2015.
