Karen Bethurem was a volleyball, basketball and softball standout for Missouri State University from 1970 to 1974. A four-year starter on the volleyball squad, Bethurem's teams qualified for the national tournament every season and won the Missouri AIAW Championship all four years. The Bears finished sixth at the national tournament in 1970 and 1971. Bethurem was also a starter on the basketball team, where the Bears were 73-31 in her four seasons and won two state titles. Her senior season, she averaged 13.3 points per game. In softball, Bethurem participated in four College World Series as the squad finished third twice, second once and won the championship in 1974.
