Joyce Swofford was a top distance runner in both track and cross country for the Bears of coach Jeff Berryessa from 1985 to 1989 in Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference competition. She was the leading MSU finisher in the conference cross country championship in 1988 and, at the time she graduated she held all five of the top single event MSU times in the outdoor half mile and three of the top five indoors. She was an all-conference selection as a junior in her specialty and was named to the MSU All-Decade Team in 1992.
