A product of Hartville, Missouri, Joe Nickle came to Missouri State and won football letters in 1931 and 1932 and four basketball letters from 1931 through 1934. One of the Bears’ top scorers in his playing career on the hardwoods, he was a captain and all-conference selection in 1933. He was a football halfback in 1931 and an end in 1932 and played for two conference runner-up teams on the gridiron. He spent one year a Missouri State student body president and was a member of the 1934 MSU basketball team which won the MIAA title and went to the national AAU tournament in Kansas City in the days before the founding of the NAIB tourney.
