DWIGHT BUMPUS
Football and Track, 1938-41
Inducted October 18, 1975

Though he was bothered by injuries throughout his MSU athletic career, Dwight Bumpus was one of the stars of one of the greatest eras in MSU gridiron history. He was a four-year football letterman from 1938 through 1941 and gained all-conference selection in 1939, 1940, and 1941. He was also on the MSU track team in 1939 and 1940. The Mt. Vernon, Ohio, native started his MSU career as a halfback and shifted to quarterback for the undefeated 1940 team. Bumpus gained national fame as a passer and in 1940 received Little All-American honorable mention when he hit on 34 of 63 passes. He came back the following year to connect on 37 or 63 for 420 yards through the aid and ran for an additional 393 yards on 84 carried for a total offense figure of 813 yards. He was also the MSU punter.
