In 1964, Wayne McKinney became the first head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with a Ph.D. Dr. McKinney was significant in helping lead the department into the areas of research and publications. During his tenure, he authored or co-authored 11 textbooks. Also during his tenure, the Andrew McDonald Award was established to honor outstanding athletic and academic achievement by a physical education major, and the athletic training major was instituted. McKinney was a key player in the rebirth of women's athletics at Missouri State in the 1960's. He was a tireless advocate for opportunities for women's sports and helped fund significant parts of the program as Missouri State women's teams enjoyed huge early success in a number of sports in the early days of competition at the state, regional and national levels for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
