Dr. Mildred Evans joined the Missouri State University staff in 1966 and was the first women’s cross country coach for the Bears, as well as volleyball mentor for two years and coaching field hockey, tennis and track. Evans was born in Tulsa, Okla., and graduated from high school in Pleasant Hill, Mo. She graduated from Central Missouri State in 1940 and also received her master’s degree from CMSU. Evans obtained her doctorate from Michigan State University. Her coaching records at MSU include guiding the school to second place in the Missouri State track championship in 1970 and to the championship of that meet a year later. Six of her athletes from the 1971 squad went to the AIAW national track championship. Her cross country teams won the Missouri AIAW state meet in both 1971 and 1972.
