Christa Townsend was a four-year standout in the early years of the Missouri State women's tennis program, competing for coach Mary Jo Wynn from the 1971 season to 1974. Townsend played in the #1 and #2 singles positions during her career and she also competed in the #1 doubles spot. She helped the Bears' tennis teams to Missouri AIAW championships in 1971, 1973 and 1974 and MSU had a runner-up finish in the state meet in 1972. As a freshman in 1971, Townsend helped the Bears to their first-ever MAIAW championship and a fifth-place finish at the regional meet.
