Another local product who made his way across town from Springfield Central to play for the Bears was Bill Stringer, a standout MSU gridder from 1963 through 1966. Stringer started his Bruin career as a center and was a freshman numeral winner on the unbeaten Mineral Water Bowl team in 1963. He lettered his last three seasons as was an all-conference first team pick in the MIAA at guard as a junior and senior. Stringer helped the Bears to a 7-3 mark and MIAA runnerup finish in 1965. An MSU team captain as a senior in 1966, his inside play was a key as the Bruins captured all five of their MIAA starts to return the conference championship to Springfield. The Bears then went an again to play Adams State in the Mineral Water Bowl game, finishing with a 9-1 league mark Stringer’s last two seasons. He was honored at the end of the year by Associated Press with a spot on the Little All-American first team at offensive guard. Following his graduation from MSU in 1967, Stringer has gone on to become a highly-successful high school football coach, posting one of the top winning percentages in the state of Missouri.
