CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Missouri State Bears were well represented as five field hockey student-athletes were named Distinguished Scholar Athletes on Friday, Feb. 6, by the Mid-American Conference.
Missouri State juniors Jessi Pope (Stafford, Va.), Holly Scherer (Belmont, Ontario), Kimberleigh Eng (Woodbridge, Va.), Charlie Redhead (Norfolk, England) and sophomore Megan Drew (San Diego, Calif.) were among the 194 student-athletes voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions, representing the `best of the best' from each sports' Academic All-MAC Teams.
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the fall sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport.
The Bears' five honorees are the most among the conference's field hockey teams, with the seven field hockey institutions combining for 17 Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award recipients.
The first of four juniors named a Distinguished Scholar for MSU, Jessi Pope is a psychology major with a cumulative 4.00 GPA. Pope played in all 18 games as a defender for the Bears in 2014, earning an assist in a Sept. 1 game at Villanova.
Holly Scherer is an administrative management major with a cumulative 3.96 GPA at MSU. The forward was the Bears' leader in goals (8), points (19) and shots (49).
An advertising and promotion major with a cumulative 3.93 GPA, Kimberleigh Eng plays in the midfield for the Bears. Eng appeared in every game for MSU in 2014, while also making 11 starts.
Charlie Redhead is majoring in psychology and has a cumulative 3.83 GPA. The junior captain played in 17 games during the 2014 season and recorded the third-highest team totals in goals (5), points (12), shots (31) and shots-on-goal (18).
The lone MSU sophomore recognized, Megan Drew is a psychology major with a cumulative 3.85 GPA. The goalkeeper played every minute in goal for the Bears in 2014 and made 94 saves during the season.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the `best of the best' individuals to be honored with the Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33 percent of nominees, whichever was greater.
Later this spring, the MAC will announce the Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the remaining 16 winter and spring sports sponsored by the conference.
